Eye issues in the horse are always consider an emergency and should be seen by us immediately. Eye pain can manifest itself in many ways but typically you will notice squinting and tearing from the affected eye. Abrasions to the cornea are very common and can have disastrous consequences if left untreated. Bacteria and fungi can rapidly destroy the corneal matrix leading to the loss of the eye. Since eye pain can be so severe sedation and regional nerve blocks are needed to adequately examine the eye. Frequently cultures and cytology are obtained to aid in the diagnosis and treatment. Lacerations on the face and eyelids need to be surgically closed as soon as possible. Should your horse show any signs of eye pain or discharge please call the office immediately.
